How to Get Rid of Neck Lines Naturally

The skin on your neck is particularly thin, meaning it shows signs of aging more quickly than other parts of your body. Plus, these days we spend a lot of time looking down at our cell phones and laptops—a habit that's caused neck wrinkles to appear earlier. To combat neck lines, you can start with daily exercises to firm and tone your neck muscles. A skincare routine (particularly sunscreen) is also important. To deal with more pronounced wrinkles, you can also visit a doctor for laser or Botox treatments.

  1. 1

Tilt your head back and stick out your lip to strengthen the front of your neck. Start by placing your fingertips on your collarbone. Then, tilt your head back so you're staring up at the ceiling. Stick out your bottom lip. Hold this position for 30 seconds.[1]

    • Breath deeply through your nose as you hold this position.
    • This exercise stretches and strengthens your platysma, the big muscle at the front of your neck. As the muscle gets toned, the skin on top will appear firmer and tauter. It also tones the area under your jaw.
  2. 2

Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to work your chin and neck muscles. Start by turning your head to the right, then tilt your face up towards the ceiling. You should begin to feel a stretch in your neck muscles. Then, put the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth, smile, and swallow.[2]

    • Repeat the exercise on your left side, and then to the center. Complete this series 2-3 times.
    • This exercise, which is sometimes called the "baby bird," works your chin and neck muscles at the same time.

Turn your head to the side and tilt back to stretch the side of your neck. Turn your head to the right, then tilt it back slightly so you feel the muscles along the left side of your neck engage. You may also feel a lift in the muscles along the left side of your face. Hold the position as you breathe in and out deeply.[3]

    • Then, turn to the left and repeat the exercise. Complete the full series twice through.

Incorporate your neck into your face cleansing routine to brighten your skin. If you already have a favorite face cleanser, that's a great start. Start washing both your face and your neck in the morning and evening. Make sure to follow it up with a moisturizer, which can temporarily mask fine wrinkles and lines by plumping up the skin cells.[4]

    • Use a washcloth for a bit of gentle exfoliation that will keep your neck skin from looking dull.
  2. 2

For the best results, use cleansers and moisturizers that are made for your skin type. For example, if you have dry skin, you'll want to use oil-based products. On the other hand, if you have oily skin look for products for acne-prone skin.[5]

  3. 3

Apply sunscreen to your neck to prevent UV damage. The best preventative measure for avoiding wrinkles and neck lines is SPF.[6] Make sure you put on sunscreen on your neck (and face!) every morning before leaving home to avoid damage caused by UV rays. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you're exposed to the sun.[7]

    • Use sunscreen that's at least 30 SPF for the best protection.
    • Use a dollop of sunscreen the size of a large grape to cover your face, neck, and ears.[8]
  4. 4

Use a vitamin C serum to promote skin cell renewal. [9] Apply the serum to your neck in the morning, along with your sunscreen. Studies have shown that pairing vitamin C with SPF moisturizer actually doubles the sunscreen's protective rating. The antioxidants also boost skin cell renewal, which helps keep your neck looking young.[10]

    • Consider a serum with L-ascorbic acid, which is a form of vitamin C that your skin can easily absorb.
  5. 5

Exfoliate your neck 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells. Use a facial cleansing brush on your neck to gently remove old skin cells. Or, purchase a face cleanser that contains glycolic acid and apply it to your neck. Leaving old skin cells on the surface of your neck will make your skin appear older and duller.[11]

    • If you have sensitive skin, only exfoliate once a week.
    • Exfoliation will make it easier for your skin to absorb any retinol creams that you apply afterward.
  6. 6

Apply a retinol-based cream at night to promote anti-aging effects. Find a cream that was created specifically for the face, neck, and chest area. After you've washed and dried your face and neck, rub a pea-sized amount of cream into your neck skin using your fingers. Retinol will increase your production of collagen and help to prevent wrinkles.[12]

    • The most effective retinol products contain between 0.5-1% retinol.
    • Since the skin on your neck is very thin, start with a product that has a low concentration of retinol to avoid irritation. You can work up to stronger products over time. If your neck skin can't handle a nightly retinol routine at first, apply it every other night until your skin adjusts.

Stimulate collagen production in your neck with a laser treatment. Lasers are sometimes used to boost collagen production, which will plump up your skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They also help strengthen the foundation of your skin. There are a number of different types of lasers that can be used on you skin, so you'll need to consult with a doctor to figure out which one you should use.[13]

    • Your doctor can also recommend how many treatments you might need and how far apart these appointments should be spaced to allow for your skin to heal. Typically, you'll need at least 2-3 treatments about a month apart to see the best results.
    • You will see results immediately following a laser treatment, but it usually takes 90-180 days after the first treatment for full collagen growth to be achieved.
  2. 2

Use Botox to temporarily relax the muscles in your neck. [14] Botox is a temporary solution to neck lines. Injecting it into your neck can relax the muscles, preventing lines from forming on the skin. But once the Botox wears off—usually between 3 and 5 months—the neck muscles will tense up again and re-fold the skin into wrinkles.[15]

    • Botox should only be injected in-office under the supervision of a doctor.
  3. 3

Inject fillers into your neck lines to minimize wrinkles for a year. Doctors can inject fillers directly into the horizontal lines on your neck to minimize their appearance. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and may cause some short-term swelling and bruising immediately afterward. The results last about a year.[16]

    • However, it's a somewhat risky procedure since your neck skin is thin and moves around often. It's possible that the fillers may result in lumpiness—make sure to consult a doctor before getting fillers.

  • Topical products work best when used consistently over time.[17]

  • Don't spend too long each day staring down at your phone or laptop! This can cause deep neck lines, a phenomenon known as "tech neck." If you do need to look down, try moving your head while straightening out your neck instead of just dropping your chin.[18]

  • If you decide to treat your neck lines with fillers, proceed with caution and consult your doctor. Since neck skin is thin and is constantly moving, injecting fillers to smooth out wrinkles may cause lumpiness if the fillers shift position.

  • If you plan to start using retinol cream on your neck to reduce lines, make sure you start with a product that contains a low concentration of retinol. If your product is too strong, it could irritate the thin skin on your neck.
